This systematic review synthesizes peer-reviewed literature (2018–2026) on microplastic contamination in aquatic environments, with emphasis on South Asia and Pakistan. The review examines global distribution patterns, environmental fate, human health risks, and evaluates conventional and nanotechnology-based remediation strategies including magnetic nanoparticles, metal-organic frameworks, MXene membranes, and biohybrid microrobots. Technology Readiness Level assessment reveals most approaches remain below TRL 4. Integrated policy recommendations for Pakistan and South Asia are proposed.
