Millions of tiny organisms living in our soil need our help. These tiny organisms are known as soil microbes. These organisms play important roles in keeping our soil healthy, helping plants grow, protecting plants from disease, and supporting ecosystems. These tiny microbes we are unable to see with the naked eye are incredibly important! Sadly, they are being threatened by soil pollution, including tiny plastic particles called microplastics. Microplastics come in many sizes, shapes, and types, which makes it hard to predict how they will affect our environment. When microplastics contaminate soil, they can disrupt the natural processes that soil microbes perform to keep our environment healthy. In this article, we focus on how microplastic pollution is generated, how it affects the soil microbiome, and what steps you can take to help protect the tiny organisms living in the soil.
