Identification, quantification, and ecological implications of microplastics in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems
AI summary Read the abstract
This review summarizes existing research on tiny plastic particles called microplastics in water and land environments, covering studies from 2019 to 2025. It found that common detection methods have accuracy limitations, and concludes that standardized testing methods and longer-term studies are needed to understand ecological effects and guide policy.
Microplastics (MPs) are a growing concern in environmental science due to their pervasiveness and potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. This review focuses on current research on sources, detection, and quantification methods for MPs and examines existing policy frameworks for mitigating MPs contamination across different ecosystems. A comprehensive analysis of the Scopus and Web of Science databases for studies published between 2019 and 2025 was performed, followed by a PRISMA analysis to determine the trend of MPs studies. Recent studies and policy framework documents regarding MPs were reviewed, and a detailed review of existing methods and techniques used in MPs studies was conducted. FTIR spectroscopy and microscopic techniques have been frequently used for MPs studies, though limitations in accuracy are noted across the literature. Current findings underscore the need for standardized methodologies to quantify MPs and inform further policy development aimed at mitigating environmental impacts. The review suggests that more longitudinal studies are needed to assess the long-term ecological effects of MPs and their removal.

This review covers the occurrence, distribution, characteristics, and analytical methods for microplastics across environmental matrices, emphasizing their small size and resistance to degradation as key factors driving persistence and risk. It identifies gaps in standardized monitoring methods needed for global comparisons.
Microplastics in the environment: Recent developments in characteristic, occurrence, identification and ecological risk
AI summary Read the abstract
This review provides a comprehensive overview of microplastic pollution across oceans, freshwater, soil, and the atmosphere, examining their sources, movement patterns, and ecological risks. Researchers found that while coastal environments have been well studied, much less is known about microplastic contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. The study synthesizes data on microplastic toxicity, bioaccumulation in organisms, and environmental fate to support better risk assessment.
Microplastics: Environmental Occurrence and Analytical Challenges
AI summary Read the abstract
This comprehensive literature review examines how microplastics — plastic particles between 1 micrometer and 5 mm — enter and move through ecosystems, and what analytical methods are used to detect them. Despite being found throughout the world, the environmental consequences and toxic effects of microplastics on living organisms are still not fully understood.
