Recommendations F ueled by unprecedented urbanization and modern life- styles, cities have become ground zero for microplastic pollution.More than 55% of the world's population now lives in cities, a share projected to reach 68% by 2050, thereby concentrating both the sources of and the pathways of exposure to microscopic plastic debris. 1 In dense urban areas, everyday activities unleash a flood of microplastics: fibers shed from synthetic clothing in each laundry load, tire dust abrading from congested roads, and fragments from single-use plastics and packaging.These particles contaminate city air, water, and even indoor spaces at levels often higher than those in rural areas.For instance, indoor microplastic concentrations can be dozens of times higher than outdoors, 2,3 meaning city dwellers are continuously breathing, drinking, and ingesting tiny plastic particles via household dust, tap water, packaged food, and more.Microplastics are infiltrating deep into our bodies; they have been detected in human blood, lung tissue, placentas, and even breast milk.4 The long-term health implications remain uncertain, but early studies link microplastic exposure to inflammation and disease.For example, plastic particles lodged in blood vessels have been correlated with higher risks of heart attacks and strokes, 5 and people with inflammatory bowel disease have been found to harbor significantly more microplastics in their feces than healthy individuals.6 Although each of these findings is preliminary when considered individually, together they indicate an emerging environmental health crisis.What was once considered an "invisible" pollution problem is now a tangible threat in daily urban life, and converging evidence underscores an urgent need for scientific and regulatory intervention to protect public health.
