The DSS "Bio-Bio Platform" That removes plastics from the Ecosystem and Marine Environment
Summary
Engineers describe the "Bio-Bio" open-source biomimetic platform, a bamboo-derived composite material designed as a drop-in replacement for petroleum plastics that suppresses methane production in landfills, self-neutralizes salinity after disposal, and degrades in marine environments without forming persistent microplastics.
The DSS "Bio-Bio" Platform (Dragonfly Salt-Sponge) is an open-source, biomimetic composite material designed to replace conventional petroleum plastics at global scale. Using PNG bamboo-derived cellulose nanofibrils (CNF/LCNF) in a Voronoi structural skeleton, an integrated hypersaline wick for methane suppression, and a novel carbon-salt symbiosis layer with post-inhibition neutralization, the platform delivers high mechanical performance during use while ensuring climate-passive and regenerative end-of-life behaviour. In landfills, the material actively inhibits methanogenic bacteria, then self-neutralises salinity and accelerates safe biodegradation into soil-friendly residue suitable as fertiliser. In marine environments, it degrades without forming persistent microplastics and can support marine microbial food webs. The technology spans flexible bags, rigid containers, bottles, plates, trays, and utensils — forming a complete single-use ecosystem. Licensed under CERN-OHL-W to enable rapid gl
