Our Shared Responsibility to End Plastic Pollution, Protect Human Health, and Advance Social Justice for All
Summary
This chapter argues that continued growth in plastic production is ethically indefensible given its demonstrated harms to all life on Earth, calling for global treaty commitments and a fundamental rethinking of how governments, corporations, and individuals relate to plastic consumption.
Continuing unchecked increases in plastic production are unethical and immoral. Moreover, continuing increases in plastic production and use are responsible for damages that threaten all forms of life on earth. Resolute international actions, including a global treaty on plastic production and disposal, are urgent. Governments, international organizations, corporations, and every citizen share the responsibility to be good stewards of creation and critically examine their lifestyles and the use of Earth’s resources.
