Stanovení obsahu plastů v mořských a jezerních sedimentech

Jordan Journal of Biological Sciences 2024
David Šlúch

Summary

Researchers characterized microplastic contamination in deep-sea sediments from multiple ocean basins, finding ubiquitous particle distribution at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Fiber morphologies dominated, suggesting that sinking of settling particles and vertical biological transport from surface waters are key pathways delivering microplastics to abyssal environments.

Study Type Environmental

The thesis focuses on the determination of microplastic (MP) content in river sediments in selected watercourses in the South Moravian Region and assesses the influence of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) as a potential source of MP pollution. The theoretical part focuses on plastic as a material and source of pollution, provides the current status of legislative standards and methodology of sediment sampling and processing. The experimental part describes the collection of 54 sediment samples from three sites of interest and then presents the treatment suitable for their subsequent analysis. This was done by visual identification using a digital microscope with a Dino – Lite camera. The number and shape of MPs and the relationship between the sampling site and the location of the WWTP were examined. The possible influence of the technology and design capacity of each WWTP was also assessed. On the basis of the obtained results of MP content in sediments, the paper was concluded with recommendations for possible future measurements.
