Journal of Environmental Quality Annual Report, 2023
Summary
This study assessed the effectiveness of a passive filtration system installed in a storm drain for capturing microplastics from urban runoff. The filtration device captured a significant fraction of microplastic particles during storm events, and particle size was the main determinant of capture efficiency, with larger particles more reliably retained.
The Journal of Environmental Quality completed its 52nd volume in 2023.We saw an increase in international submissions and expect to see this trend continue in 2024.We published a well-received special section in 2023 on the soil health-watershed health nexus. Also published in 2023 were a number of reviews, including microplastics in composts, digestates, and food waste and a critical look at how variation in methodology obscures the clarity of cropland global warming potential estimates. We look forward to special sections in 2023 on PFAS and Agroecosystems, Phosphorus (a tribute to Andrew Sharpley), and the USDA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Network Common Experiment.I want to express my gratitude and appreciation to all members of the JEQ board, as well as to the reviewers and authors that contribute to the success of JEQ.The tireless efforts of the Technical Editors and Associate Editors who give their feedback and ideas on how to improve how we operate are greatly appreciated.
