The second big import leaned into solutions: degradation, recycling, and bioplastics. And one study warning the problem is outpacing all of them.
The second big import added 25,378 papers. Where the founding corpus was about finding plastic, much of this batch was about what to do with it: degrade it, recycle it, replace it. And one heavily cited study warning that none of it is keeping up.
A 2020 analysis modeled plastic waste for 173 countries under the most ambitious reduction, collection, and cleanup commitments governments had made. Even in that best case, millions of tonnes keep entering rivers and oceans every year, with 2016's input put at 19 to 23 million tonnes. It is the number that frames everything else in this batch. The solutions below are real and worth pursuing. They are also, so far, losing the race.
The push to break it down
A lot of the batch is about degradation and recycling, the work of dealing with plastic already made. Several reviews survey the enzymes that can break down polymers like PET under mild conditions, cutinases and laccases chief among them. Others take a harder look at the fixes we already have. One review of biodegradable plastics points out that the label means far less than shoppers assume, since most do not break down under everyday conditions. Another is blunt about recycling, noting that the world recycles roughly 9 percent of its plastic against more than 400 million tonnes made each year. Chemical depolymerization, which breaks plastic back to virgin-quality feedstock, shows up as a more serious route for the waste ordinary recycling cannot handle.
Where the plastic settles
The batch also widened the map. A review of the soil plastisphere treats plastic in the ground as its own habitat, a surface that selects for particular microbes. A survey of coral reefs across three oceans found debris at most of the 84 sites studied, concentrated deeper than expected. And a review on ocean pollution and human health made the case that the most effective place to protect people is upstream, by cutting land-based pollution before it reaches the water. The through-line is that plastic does not stay where we drop it, and the cleanup has to meet it everywhere it goes.
What it adds up to
If the founding index was a field learning where plastic is, this expansion was a field arguing about what to do. The honest reading is mixed. The tools are getting better, and the problem is still outrunning them. Both are in this batch, and the Atlas indexes them side by side.
